Bill Siemering will share his perspective on the evolution of public radio, beginning as a boon for American farmers, developing into a national cultural institution, and then strengthening community radio stations and programming in developing countries.
Bill’s credentials are extensive and influential. He served as the first Director of Programming at National Public Radio and authored NPR’s original mission statement, National Public Radio Purposes. A pioneering advocate for diversity in broadcasting, he recognized early on how local radio could transform lives and strengthen communities. Bill also created public radio’s first signature program, All Things Considered, and later developed Fresh Air. His achievements earned him a MacArthur Foundation “genius” grant. He went on to become President of Developing Radio Partners, an organization devoted to supporting independent radio stations in developing countries, and he served as an Annenberg Visiting Scholar from 2016 to 2017.
