From Philly sandlots to the Big Leagues: Edith Houghton's story will be told with visuals by Rebecca Alpert, retired professor in the Departments of Religion and Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies at Temple University and author of several books and articles about sports and religion.
Edith Houghton (1912-2013) was born and raised on Diamond Street in Philadelphia. She gained renown playing shortstop for the professional women's Philadelphia Bobbies at age 10, and from 1925 on, she played on women's teams that toured Japan and played against men's baseball teams. In 1946, she approached Phillies' owner Bob Carpenter, and was hired as MLB's first full-time woman scout. Every Philadelphian should hear her story.
